When Plans Change

“In any given moment we have two options: to step forward into growth or step back into safety.”
— Abraham Maslow

Whenever I have started a business before, the focus was, “What have other people done so that I can also be successful?”

And this time the focus is more of, “I don’t like that so I’m not going to do it.”

This applies both to the services I offer, the clients I work with, the way I advertise and how I describe myself to others.

In building out my website and reorganizing my business, I continue to move through an iterative process of taking a step toward what I believe is correct for me, and then just sitting with it.

Truly, that’s my secret weapon in building this business - sitting with whatever “answer” it feels like I have arrived at next.

There is no expectation of perfection, something lasting forever or even assuming that “answer” was the correct one in the first place.

Rather, I find an answer that seems interesting, I sit with it - probably ask my trusted advisors their thoughts - and then I take another step forward.

Sometimes I take a step forward without really knowing what outcome that step will bring.
Sometimes I take a step forward when I know it wasn’t the “correct answer” for me, but I don’t know a different direction to move in.

And sometimes I take a step backwards.

I retreat into the safety of what I have done in the past, what has been proven to work or even into what someone else has done until I feel equipped to take the steps that are in alignment with my path.

Finding answers and taking steps aren’t mutually inclusive, exclusive or even need to be connected to each other.

Most of the time all that matters is that you are moving in alignment with who you are

— which can be the hardest part of all.
